Some couples need a little time to forget about the camera. Layal and her fiancé made it look effortless from the beginning.
I photographed their engagement session at the National Arts Centre in downtown Ottawa ahead of their wedding. The NAC gave me a modern, elegant setting with a variety of backgrounds, but what made this session so memorable was the natural connection between the two of them.
A relaxed engagement session at the NAC
Engagement sessions should feel like time spent together—not a long series of stiff poses. I offer enough direction to help couples feel comfortable while leaving room for their real personalities to come through.
That approach worked beautifully with Layal and her fiancé. They were naturally comfortable together, and he kept making her laugh throughout the session. Those spontaneous moments quickly became some of my favourite photographs from the day.
I captured the classic portraits every couple should have, but I also focused on the smaller moments in between: shared looks, genuine laughter and the way they naturally interacted when they weren’t thinking about the camera.

Why the NAC works so well for engagement photographs
The National Arts Centre is a great location for couples who prefer a modern, architectural look for their engagement photographs. Its clean lines, glass exterior and neutral tones create an elegant background without distracting from the couple.
Its downtown location also allows me to create a varied gallery without travelling far. Around the NAC, I can capture architectural portraits, close candid moments and wider photographs that give the session a sense of place.
For Layal and her fiancé, the modern surroundings complemented their natural energy perfectly. The setting gave their photographs a polished appearance, while their laughter and connection kept everything warm and personal.

More than photographs before the wedding
An engagement session is also an opportunity for a couple to become comfortable being photographed together before their wedding. They learn what the experience feels like, and I get to understand how they naturally interact.
By the time the wedding arrives, being in front of my camera feels much more familiar. Instead of worrying about posing, the couple can focus on one another and enjoy the day.
Layal and her fiancé’s session was a perfect example of why I enjoy engagement photography. Their photographs felt genuine because the moments between them were genuine. They trusted my process, enjoyed themselves and allowed the session to reflect who they were together.
It remains one of my favourite engagement sessions—not only because of the NAC setting, but because of the happiness and laughter they brought to every part of it.
What Layal said about her experience
“We had an amazing experience with Tamer at Kameel Photography. We did our engagement photoshoot with him and he went above and beyond to accommodate us. He has a creative vision and a keen eye. He took amazing spontaneous shots of us and we were very happy and pleased with the photos. I would recommend him to anyone looking to have a couples photoshoot, family or any other event.”
