A Fall Proposal at the Ornamental Gardens — Helen & Chris's Surprise Proposal in Ottawa

2 min read

The Plan

Chris reached out a few weeks before the big day with a vision: a quiet, intimate proposal surrounded by fall colour, far from crowds and distractions. We talked through the details together — the exact spot in the gardens, the best time of day for soft golden light, and where I would be positioned so Helen wouldn't suspect a thing.

That's one of the things I love most about photographing proposals. It's not just about showing up with a camera. It's about planning every detail with you so the moment unfolds naturally, and all you have to think about is the question you're about to ask.

The Moment

On a crisp fall afternoon, the gardens were glowing — deep reds, burnt oranges, and golden yellows lining the pathways. Chris led Helen down one of the quieter garden paths, and as they reached the spot we had chosen, he dropped to one knee.

Her reaction said everything. The surprise, the tears, the laughter — and of course, the yes.

From my position nearby, I captured it all without ever breaking the intimacy of the moment. By the time Helen realized a photographer had been there the whole time, every genuine, unrepeatable second had already been documented.

A Mini Engagement Session, Right After

One of the best parts of a planned proposal is what comes next. Once the ring was on her finger, Helen and Chris got an impromptu engagement session in one of Ottawa's most beautiful settings — no extra booking needed, no waiting weeks for a separate shoot.

We wandered through the gardens as the late-afternoon light filtered through the trees, capturing portraits of the newly engaged couple while the excitement was still written all over their faces. Fall in Ottawa only lasts a few short weeks, and the Ornamental Gardens in peak colour is something special.

Why the Ornamental Gardens Is Perfect for Proposals

If you're planning a proposal in Ottawa, the Ornamental Gardens deserves a spot at the top of your list:

The gardens offer endless variety — hedges, flower beds, tree-lined paths, and open lawns — all within a short walk. It's quieter than spots like Major's Hill Park or the locks downtown, which makes it easier to find a private moment. Parking is easy, and it's free to visit. And in the fall, the colour is simply unmatched.

Planning Your Own Proposal?

If you're thinking about popping the question in Ottawa, I'd love to help you plan it. From scouting the perfect location to coordinating timing and staying hidden until the moment is right, I'll make sure the only thing you need to worry about is remembering what you want to say.Congratulations again, Helen and Chris — thank you for letting me be part of the beginning of your forever.
